Both stakes were for 3-year-olds and both run at one mile on the turf. The Coady was for colts and geldings, the Chandler for fillies.
In the Coady Stakes, Twelve Tribes ($4.40) with Geovanni Franco aboard, was up in the final strides to defeat Taelyns Prince by a head with the pace-setting Deadly Black Eagle a quarter-length further back in the compact field of five.
Owned by Charles Garvey and under the tutelage of leading trainer Robertino Diodoro, Twelve Tribes covered the one mile over firm turf in 1:36.65. Twelve Tribes has now won four of eight starts.
Commenting in the paddock prior to the running of the Chandler Stakes, trainer Valorie Lund, said, “I don’t like to run them back this soon (Bear Facts’ last race was a local turf win, Oct. 25). But she deserves a shot with these other 3-year-olds. She’s been running against older.”
Bear Facts ($18.80), benefitting from a sharp, well-timed ride by Juan Gutierrez, broke free in deep stretch from a pack of horses to collar the hard-charging Aware and win by three-quarters of a length. Sunpenny finished third a neck in front of Make Money Honey, the 9-5 favorite in the field of nine sophomore misses.
Owned by WindyLea Farms, Bear Facts covered the one mile over the grass faster than the boys in 1:36.56. Bear Facts has now won four of 19 efforts.
