Kachina, Fillies and Mares, 3-year-olds and up
Maker of Breaker ($6.20), sent off the third choice at 2-1, broke free from her stretch rivals, Rock and Glory and Lady Rosberg (who finished in that order) in the scratch-reduced field of five to add her third stakes win locally.
Ridden by Israel Hernandez for trainer Dan McFarlane, Maker of Break, a 5-year-old Empire Maker mare, covered the one mile over fast going in 1:35.94.
Owned by Patti and Hal Earnhardt, III, Maker or Breaker has now won 7 of 16 races for over $264,974 in earnings.
The betting public may have thought Storm Power ($3.20) was a 3-5 cinch, but the 4-year-old Tiz Wonderful gelding was all out to hold a determined Az Ridge a nose shy at the wire, denying McFarlane a stakes sweep. Red Zeus, also under McFarlane’s care, finished third in the field of six older horses.
Handled masterfully by leading reinsman Geovanni Franco, Storm Power, laid off the early pace set by Canadian import Balooga Bull and Uncle Dave before making his move in tandem with Az Ridge ridden by Ronald Richard.
The Robertino Diodoro-trained Storm Power raced the one mile in 1:35.22.
Owned by Mercedes Stables, Storm Power was winning for the fourth time in 10 lifetime efforts and now has $128,488 in earnings. Storm Power is a perfect 3-for-3 locally and like Maker or Breaker, was winning his third consecutive stakes.
